Some Rolls-Royces are simply special. Others belong to an entirely different category.

This 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II SCT-100, coachbuilt by the legendary James Young of London, is one of those automobiles. Presented in outstanding condition, this remarkable Rolls-Royce not only looks magnificent, but runs and drives stunningly, offering the wonderful combination of rarity, craftsmanship, presence, and usability that serious collectors look for.

The SCT-100 was one of James Young's most distinctive designs for the Silver Cloud II. Rather than using Rolls-Royce's standard factory steel saloon body, selected Silver Cloud II chassis were delivered to James Young Coachbuilders, one of Britain's most prestigious coachbuilding houses, where they were transformed into hand-crafted Touring Limousines.

Only 37 Silver Cloud II chassis are generally documented as having received the SCT-100 body, making this one of the rarest coachbuilt variants of the Silver Cloud II.

The design is particularly striking. With its substantial rear pillars, distinctive roofline, elegant rear treatment, and beautifully proportioned coachwork, the SCT-100 possesses an unmistakably formal presence. Its styling bears a clear relationship to James Young's larger Phantom V designs, earning the affectionate nickname "Baby Phantom."

This was not merely an exercise in styling. James Young incorporated a level of bespoke craftsmanship and detailing that set these cars apart from the ordinary Silver Cloud. The interiors were typically distinguished by additional woodwork and carefully considered appointments, creating the sort of intimate, hand-finished environment that could only come from a traditional British coachbuilder. Adding further significance, the SCT-100 was offered as a long-wheelbase Touring Limousine, giving its occupants additional space and presence while retaining the magnificent proportions of the Silver Cloud II chassis.

This particular example is also right-hand drive, exactly as one would expect of a grand British coach built Rolls-Royce of this period.

While rarity alone would make this Silver Cloud II noteworthy, its condition and driving characteristics make it considerably more appealing.

This car is in lovely condition, and importantly, it is not simply a car to admire from behind a velvet rope. It runs and drives stunningly, delivering the quiet, effortless character for which the Silver Cloud II is so highly regarded.

The combination of the smooth 6.2-liter V8, traditional Rolls-Royce refinement, long-wheelbase coachwork, and beautifully executed James Young body makes for a remarkably special grand touring automobile.

The SCT-100 represents a fascinating period in British motoring when Rolls-Royce chassis could still be entrusted to independent coachbuilders and transformed into genuinely bespoke automobiles. Today, that era is long gone, and surviving examples such as this offer collectors the opportunity to own something that could simply never be produced in the same manner again.
